How to check if a euro banknote is genuine?
In connection with the introduction of the euro in the Republic of Bulgaria, the Bulgarian National Bank reminds citizens how to recognize genuine euro banknotes and how to react in case of suspected counterfeiting, the central bank announced on its website.
How to check if a euro banknote is genuine?
Genuine euro banknotes contain security features that can be easily recognized without specialized devices. The authenticity check is carried out using the method:
“Feel, Look and Tilt ”
• Feel – the banknote is noisy and hard, you can feel the relief in the printed images;
• Examine – the watermark and security thread are checked against a light source;
• Tilt – the images and colours of the hologram strip change, the denomination number in the lower left corner changes colour from emerald green to dark blue.

What to do if in doubt
• If you are handed a banknote and you suspect that it is counterfeit – do not accept it.
• If you have already accepted a banknote and you think it may be counterfeit – immediately notify the police or call 112.
Important to know
Using a banknote that you know is counterfeit is a crime. Counterfeit banknotes have no value and no compensation is paid when they are accepted.
