UK sanctions Russian spies over cyber and poison attacks on the west
The UK has imposed sanctions on several Russian spy units and military intelligence officers in response to Moscow’s hybrid warfare against western states.
The UK government said on Friday it was placing sanctions on three units of the Russian military intelligence agency (GRU) and 18 military intelligence officers, who it said were “responsible for conducting a sustained campaign of malicious cyber activity over many years, including in the UK ”.
Among those sanctioned are GRU officers who the UK said were responsible for targeting Yulia Skripal’s phone with malware in the lead up to the novichok nerve agent attacks in Salisbury in 2018.
