Attorney Mikhail Ekimdzhiev: Repression of People Who Are Not Responsible Is Underway

The European approach to emergency situations is on the proportional constraints principle. This means taking restrictive measures depending on the degree of threat, thus, lawyer Mikhail Ekimdzhiev commented on the new Emergency Measures Act.

In an interview with Radio Varna's Broadcast “Position”, he predicts that the situation is likely to require additional measures beyond those outlined in the law.

According to Mikhail Ekimdzhiev, in time of a state of emergency, some rights may be restricted, excluding freedom of speech and the right to free will: Restrictions need to be imposed, but we see some people inclined to power and repression take advantage of this situation in an unhealthy, criminal way and start repressing people who are not responsible.

On the pre-trial proceedings against Plovdiv doctors who signaled that Saint Mina Hospital was not ready to work as an infectious one, lawyer Ekimdzhiev commented: The prosecutor's office should have taken measures against those who have allowed conditions directly threatening human health, instead it aimed at the doctors who warned about the problem. I.e. the state's resource is not directed where it is needed. This is the issue that can hurt our confidence in power far more than the epidemic itself.
