Over two-thirds of Bulgarians Live Sustainably and Save on Electricity, Water – Survey

Over two-third of Bulgarian understand correctly the term “sustainable household”, save on electricity, water and detergents and use home appliances which are energy saving, according to a representative Trend poll. The survey was carried out in May among 1,002 adult respondents through face-to-face interviews and is on the occasion of World Environment Protection Day, June 5. It gives an idea what Bulgarians do most which is connected with the sustainable way of living and how they understand the notion of sustainable household. According to Dimiter Ganev of Trend, 23% of people use energy saving appliances. The most active groups of people, aged between 30 and 59, to a greater extent are open to environmental and sustainable trends. The largest percentage among the most elderly, 47%, say that they don’t throw out food and buy only as much as they need. Whereas among the young this option is chosen by less than a third and this is due to the lack of enough experience and judgment how much foods they will need and how it can be planned over the following days. For nearly half of Bulgarians the sustainable way of production impacts their choice. The dishwashing machine has become a household staple over the past five years, the survey also shows. Bulgarian consumers believe that the main responsibility for protecting the environment falls on producers and brands which have to produce more sustainable products.
