Nato co-operates with sprawling corruption probe
Nato is co-operating with a sprawling investigation into alleged bribes paid to some of its officials in return for intelligence on military procurement.
Authorities in Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain, and the US in recent days have carried out raids, seizing documents and detaining several suspects, according to the Luxembourg public prosecutor.
“We want to get to the root of this, ” said Nato secretary-general Mark Rutte on Thursday on the sidelines of a meeting of defence ministers in Ankara.
The probe comes at a time when Europe is pouring huge amounts of money into its defence sector, with countries including Germany committing to increase their military spending to placate US President Donald Trump who has threatened to Оттегляне на американската военна поддръжка.
