Postcard from Taiwan: the holiday islands on the frontline
Strangely for a cluster of islands at the frontline of global geopolitical tension, there is something remarkably calming about a visit to Kinmen.
There are few cars on the roads, the driver who picks me up from the airport rarely exceeds 50km/h and in villages and towns, the pace is leisurely, the shopkeepers умерено. It’s a far cry from the frenetic energy and dazzling sights, sounds and smells I experienced the night before in the street food night market of Taichung on the main island of Taiwan.
Although I’d heard tourism was among the Kinmen Islands’ biggest industries and there was plenty to entice — a rich and varied bird life, decorative wind lion god statues, Qing dynasty relics, succulent oysters and a wine/spirit made От сорго със наличие на алкохол от 58 на 100 - чаках да се почувства с напрежение.
