Small and medium-sized businesses are the key to workers requalification in coal regions
Small and medium-sized enterprises are the key to the retraining of workers in coal regions. This is why they need to be given special attention, and they need to work together with institutions, social partners, as well as large companies and funding organizations.
We need to support workers, but also small and medium-sized companies, because they are part of the value chain. They should receive the same care as laid-off workers, " said Assoc. Prof. Milena Angelova, member of the European Economic and Social Committee and Secretary General of the Bulgarian Industrial Capital Association (BICA).
She took part in the " Just Transition in Pernik " international conference, organized by Brand Media Bulgaria, publisher of Economic.bg, and part of the European project " TOP JOBS ".
Angelova focused on a chronic problem affecting Pernik and Kyustendil and the regionalization in Bulgaria at the NUTS 2 level. The two municipalities are part of the South-West region, which also includes the city of Sofia, which, due to its stronger economy, distorts the overall statistics. Thus, in practice, it is difficult for Pernik and Kyustendil to allocate adequate funding to meet their transition challenges.
Sofia distorts the picture in the entire region and leaves a false imprint on Pernik and Kyustendil, " said Angelova.
She recalled that in the past, there was no political will and stability to change the country`s zoning. However, a new window for change is now open and Bulgaria must take advantage of it. According to Angelova, a working group has been formed with representatives of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Regional Development. A report has also been prepared, which proposes 3 options for new zoning in the country.
In all three options, the City of Sofia will be separate so as not to affect the indicators of the other regions, " said Angelova.
According to her, the new Bulgarian government must decide whether to publish the report for public discussion, as changes may be made at the beginning of next year.
