25 new COVID-19 confirmed cases for the past 24 hours

One hundred days after its establishment, today PM Boyko Borissov announced the end of the coronavirus crisis response team’s daily briefings.

Since the first two cases of coronavirus infection were discovered on March 8 in Sofia, the team has held daily – and sometimes twice-daily – press briefings to announce new cases, new deaths, measures and so on.

The coronavirus response team will not be dismantled, however. Borissov said it will continue its work until December of this year. It will be its responsibility to make sure there are enough tests as needed, medical safety equipment, medicine and the like. The period will also serve as a stand-by in case “the situation worsens.” The PM thanked “the team, medical workers, social workers and all Bulgarians” and assessed “we managed tremendously well during a very severe infection and pandemic.”

He went on to express his hope a second and third wave do not occur, but highlighted that in terms of this one, the Bulgarian government managed to prevent a scenario such as what we saw in Italy, Spain, and what we are seeing today in the U.S.

Indeed, Bulgaria registered a relative low number of infections and deaths: to date, the total number of confirmed cases of a coronavirus infection amount to 2585. 1116 are the currently active cases, while 1322 have recovered. 147 people with the virus have died. There was no mass testing in Bulgaria, however, except in Bansko, were a full lockdown was imposed, and in certain neighborhoods. Otherwise, only people with symptoms and contact persons of confirmed cases were tested. The positive cases during the mass testing in Bansko averaged at about 5,5%.
