In his 2024 artistic manifesto, A New Philosophy of Opera, Yuval Sharon claims that Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde is the “single hardest work in the traditional repertoire to stage ” — and yet it’s the opera the American director has chosen for his Metropolitan Opera debut.
