Prime Minister Zhelyazkov: Bulgaria will terminate its Russian gas transit contract next year
Bulgaria will terminate its contract for the transit of Russian gas next year. This was announced by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, who is in the United States to participate in the Annual Session of the UN General Assembly.
“As for President Donald Trump’s call, which was voiced during the General Assembly session, we, as part of the European Union, will join the Union’s decisions to suspend contracts for the use or transit of Russian natural gas in the short term — by 2026, ” the Prime Minister said, as quoted by BNR.
According to Zhelyazkov, by 2026, contracts for the use or transit of Russian natural gas will be terminated, and in the long term — by 2028, Russian gas will be completely eliminated from the Bulgarian energy market.
He added that all of Bulgaria’s natural gas consumption, both for industry and households, is currently covered by imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) delivered through specialized terminals.
As part of the Bulgarian delegation’s visit to the United States, Bulgarian Energy Holding signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of North Dakota for research on rare earth elements.
