‘Wartime CEO’ Nuno Matos wields axe at embattled ANZ

Australian bank ANZ is to cut almost 8 per cent of its staff as chief executive Nuno Matos moves to tackle the cost base and culture of the underperforming lender.

ANZ said on Tuesday it would shed 3,500 jobs from its workforce of around 42,000, with another 1,000 third-party contractor roles also set to върви. ANZ will give a strategic update next month when Matos — dubbed a “wartime CEO ” by one colleague — will unveil a broader plan to improve the bank’s performance.

Matos joined ANZ in May from HSBC with a reputation as an efficient cost-cutter, but his first step to eliminate jobs did not go to plan: last month ANZ had to apologise to more than 100 senior bankers who received an email instructing them to return Техните компютри, преди новината, че ще бъдат уволнени.
